Zappturday: On the subject of her name

I’ve never cared what people name their dogs. I mean, it’s a dog. In fact, I find it hilarious when people give their dogs incredibly normal human names like Mike or John. All I cared about was if I had dogs and if they were cute and awesome. And, let’s be honest, I would very rarely use their real name, instead opting for a ridiculous nickname.

Ross is different. He had known he wanted to name his first dog Shooter long before we even thought about getting a dog. When we talked about getting a second dog, I made a suggestion.

“It’d be neat if we got a really big dog and named it Bear.”

“No. We’re naming it Zapp.”

“Why?”

“After Zapp Branigan.”

For those you who don’t know, Zapp Branigan is a character on Futurama. A character that doesn’t wear pants. But, being that it was a miracle that Ross was even hinting at the fact that he would be OK with a second dog, I wasn’t going to push it.

So we got another dog. A sweet girl dog. And named her Zapp. After a cartoon male. Who, again, doesn’t wear pants.

Here’s a picture so you can see why this is hilarious:

Another hilarious part about her name is that when she’s misbehaving or won’t come inside when you call her, you have to yell “Zapp! Zapp! Zapp!” over and over again and sound like a crazy idiot.

Incidentally, she does have nicknames. Things like Zapp-along, Zapparoni, Zapparoo, Zappy-girl, and ZappAttack are the most common.

Shooter just has one nickname, his full name really… Shooter Belle Catrow.

  1. I call him Shooter McTooter. I don’t think he likes it very much.

  2. I’ve been known to refer to him as Shooter McGavin. In case you don’t remember, he’s the villain from Happy Gilmore.

  3. I love Zapp! He’s my favourite character on Futurama. I laughed out loud when I read the bit about calling “Zapp! Zapp! Zapp!”. I agree that your neighbours probably think you’re crazy! :D

  4. You’ll notice that Zapp Branigan and Shooter McGavin are basically the same character.

  5. Awesome. I have a little dog, named Hammer. We also call him Hammy, or Ham Ham. I want another little dog. I’m going to name him Fist. They have tough names to scare my neighbors…. :) I think Shooter and Zapp are cool names too!

  6. If I were a superhero, I totally wouldn’t wear pants. That would be awesome.

  7. I always wondered how that dog name came about! I figured that it was some obscure reference to something, but hey - I watch that show!

Does this mean that you, Val, get full naming rights of any offspring? Because I think Ross has kind of a monopoly here. I mean, fair’s fair, right?

  8. I’ve never seen Futurama… but if there is a pantless man on the show, maybe I should start!

  9. We named our female puppy after a boy character from the Sandlot. So you’re not alone!

  10. Oh wow, what an AWESOME person to name a dog after. Seriously…Futurama references are always good.

My pup is a human-name kind of dog so he’s Calvin. We always get silly looks every time we tell people that though so to outdo ourselves, our next dog will be:

    Acadamy-award-winning-actress-Susan-Sarandon.

Calvin won’t seem so weird after that.
