One doesn't *become* a Southern lady. You either are, or you're not. No amount of acclimation will make up for a lack of upbringing based on bare feet, good manners, and the mastery of puddling rather than sweating.

I totally feel the same way about teaching...sometimes I miss it so much, I get that same pain in my chest. And then I realize I don't have to grade 150 terribly written research papers...I think what I miss is teaching literature, seeing those little moments of inspiration when a kid actually "gets it." Maybe I'll use you as inspiration for a "here's what I miss teaching to high schoolers" post.

And the The Giver changed my life.

1) I was actually thinking of "Where The Red Fern Grows" today, and how it took my mom almost an hour to calm me down after I finished that! Holy crap, I was sad for weeks. But it's just. so. good!
2) The Giver was my favorite book for more than half my life, and in February the Junior League brought Lois Lowry here to speak. Because I'm a wee bit obsessed, I volunteered to throw a lunch for her while she was here, which I pulled off. If you're interested to know how it went, though--shoot me an email or something. :)

My husband saw this post before I did, and he was like, "Val posted another reason why you two are the same person!" Granted, I've never read any of the Lemony Snicket books, and I would have picked The BFG, but we are pretty much on the same page. :) I love love love your first pick. "I pledge a lesson to the frog of the United States of America..."

At that age, I loved the Prydain series, by Lloyd Alexander, and I think those are pretty good for boys. I also loved The Great Gilly Hopkins, and of course, the Chronicles of Narnia. Oh, and anything by Cynthia Voigt. Remembering her books makes me ache a little inside.
