Latest things
I meant to write this weekend, but I spent it enjoying my now healthy son and not reading my email. It was pretty great. But, alas, I now have some catching up to do. Womp womp womp.
So! A list it is…
Guys, Jersey Shore. I know I’m way late with this one (as I was with Lady Gaga) but Oh Lord, I love it so. I can’t even explain why. Wait, yes I can: fist pump.
Also: Caprica. I was hesitant because seriously, why mess with a good thing? I’m not *totally* hooked at this point, but it has my attention.
My skincare obsession has now ventured over into makeup. Specifically foundation. I’ve been using a tinted moisturizer, but that just isn’t cutting it anymore. I want something that gives decent coverage but doesn’t get cakey. Tell me, what do you use?
Last Christmas Ross and I just gave each other books. He ended up giving me The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. It follows the construction of the Chicago World’s Fair while ALSO following a serial killer who used the huge crowds attracted by the fair to scout out his victims. Not my typical cup of tea but, man, I loved it. You should read it. But don’t read the last chapter before bed because GUHHHHHH.
I toured another day care center last week. Not because I’m unhappy with where JR currently is, but I had already called this place and scheduled the tour before he started, so it made sense to go look. It was AMAZING. The waiting list if 6 months to a year, so we’re looking at that as our long term plan while his current center is working just fine for now.
Ross and I watched Inglorious Basterds this weekend. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also realized that I am not at all fazed by movie violence. Wanna show someone’s face getting shot off? Sure, I can take it.
We also watched The Hurt Locker this weekend (because I am either 1) the best wife ever or 2) turning into a dude). I enjoyed this one, too. I also realized that the *suggestion* of violence (or fatal wounding) is much more disturbing to me than *actual* violence. Also, (SPOILER MAYBE) why does Ralph Fiennes get almost top billing when he’s in the movie for like 45 seconds?
My sister and I are taking my mom out to lunch for her birthday tomorrow. I told her she we could go wherever she wanted. She picked Chipotle. This is hilarious to me.

That’s all I’ve got for now. We will return to more coherent ramblings soon…

Cover Girl Clean foundation is pretty good to me.
The Devil in the White City is on my list of books to read this year, it’s good to hear from someone I know (and not a random amazon.com reviewer) that it’s good.
For foundation I use smashbox halo powder. it’s expensive, yes, but hey, I’ve only got one face! It covers really well, doesn’t settle into fine lines, and lasts all day. and actually, one tub (jar? box?) of it lasted me a good 9 months. sound investment.
Hurt Locker was directed by a lady. I know you know this, but I WANTED TO PUT IT OUT THERE.
I use Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX foundation, and I’ve had similar skin issues as you. I love it… it’s so light and provides nice coverage. It’s not cheap (I think ~$28/bottle?), but it lasts forever (for me, about a year) and it’s worth it to me considering the crap I’ve been through with my skin!
I’m so glad you liked Devil in the White City! I recommended that to Ross? Did he tell you that? Or did he just hog all the credit?
I use Bare Escentuals mineral foundation (and blush) because someone taught me to use it at one of their stores five years ago. The coverage is so-so, but my skin also sucks up makeup like no one’s business. It has SPF, and it supposedly promotes good skin health, if that means anything to you. However, it is pricey. So this is kind of a lackluster recommendation. I just don’t have it in me to find another foundation, so Bare Escentuals, it is.
I always loved clinique’s fondations. They have a variety of coverages, and none are too cakey. They’re not expensive, and you can usually find a gift w/purchase deal. I now use the body shop’s line of mineral foundation. Good coverage for $26 for a jar. It also has fewer steps and higher SPF than bare essentials. I LOVE it.
I’m sure you won’t be surprised, but I LOVE Mary Kay’s mineral powder foundation. I was a liquid foundation girl for a long time, but I find the mineral powder gives great coverage and is really light-weight. It’s a natural product (as the FDA says in order for something to say “mineral” it has to be natural) and if applied correctly doesn’t look caked on. It’s also cheaper than most ($18 for a .28oz jar) and is only one step.
We started watching Caprica because it got good reviews and they said you didn’t need BSG background to watch it. So we got hooked on that and my husband immediately bought the DVDs and we are watching BSG now! Love it!!
Also, I loved Devil in the White City! It was fantastic. It read like a fiction novel. I would forget that it was based on real facts!
okay so the foundation I use is a mary kay powder and it is SO awesome. i got a ridiculous amount of compliments on my skin when i started using it. and my mom did too. it’s not cakey and no one even knows i’m wearing it (except for everyone who reads this comment). Im very suspicious of foundations and this is the BEST product. (and no, im not a mary kay lady. although i’d dig a pink cadillac)
Ok, I might as well be confessing to wearing Talbots or something- but I really like my Merle Norman foundation.
It has SPF, you don’t have to use much to have good coverage, it matches skin tone perfectly, and I use the kind for oily skin and it doesn’t cake or turn to goo. Now if you have eyeliner and mascara that doesn’t leave you looking like a raccoon with undereye circles at the end of the day…i’m all ears (eyes?) (oh bad puns all over the place)
Not only was The Hurt Locker directed by a lady, but that lady is James Cameron’s ex-wife. I hope she wins all the Oscars and Avatar wins none. (They go head to head in six categories, one of which is Best Director! dun-dun-dun-DUUU)
I love Lorac foundation – found at Sephora of course!
I don’t have much input on foundation, because I just use a Mac pressed powder, which I really like. I’ve been considering foundation lately because, well, I’m getting older and so is my skin. Blah.
But, I did see Inglorious Bastards recently and I really liked it too, I found myself thinking about it often after I watched it which I feel like is a sign of a good movie. But watching it made me realize that I suddenly can’t handle movie violence anymore, I used to be able to handle it no problem (maybe even enjoy it, is that ok to admit?). I had to actually cover my eyes.
