FAQ
Were you really, ahem, “made” in Richmond?
Although I don’t know the specifics of my conception (nor do I care to – Hi, Dad!) as my parents were dirt poor when I was born, I can’t imagine they were galavanting around the globe when I came into the picture. They already had two kids under the age of six, and I’m pretty sure a trip to Pizza Hut was about exotic as it got. Regardless, my upbringing took place in the River City and played an important role in the creation that is Valerie.
Speaking of your family, what are they like?
I have a mom and a dad. My mom now has a husband who isn’t that dad, and my dad now has a wife who isn’t that mom. It took me a while to get used that, but I’m a big fan of my complicated American family.
I have a brother who is five years and 10 months-ish older than me. He has a wife who is wonderful. Really.
I have a sister who is two years and two months-ish older than me. Even though we are the same height, her legs are a good two inches longer than mine. BLAST.
Don’t ever say anything bad about anyone of my family or bad things will happen. Offenses unto members of my family are the only situations in which I contemplate being rude or violent. I’m just being honest here.
Back to Richmond. What’s your favorite thing about this place?
While I love the river, the restaurants, and the artsy but not super-pretentious feel of Richmond, I have to say that I think the best thing about Richmond is the quirky residents. I love how people from Richmond give directions (“Turn where the Thalheimer’s used to be.”) and their response to forecasts for snow (MILK AND BREAD! MILK AND BREAD!).
Do you and your husband really love each other *that* much?
Yes. And if nothing else, I hope people walk away from the stories about our marriage knowing that there is such thing as a perfect match.
You sure hang out with your in-laws a lot? What’s that about?
I’ve known my in-laws since I was about 15. Not only have they been super supportive in anything Ross and I have ever done, they are excellent people to drink with.
What’s it like to have such a huge baby?
What’s it like? Heavy, I guess?
Do you write for any other websites?
Why yes, I do. Thanks for asking. I’m the editor and a featured contributor over at RVANews. We are a Richmond-focused online magazine of sorts. We also eat a lot of donuts.
